Local Food and Nutrition Education Channel
Background
The Network for a Healthy California Local Food and Nutrition Education Channel was created in FFY 2006 to replace the Food Security Channel which was established in FFY 1998.
The Network has funded over 30 food security planning and implementation projects to address the hunger and food security needs of low-income individuals and families in California. The contracts were awarded on a competitive basis via three Requests for Applications (RFA).
Local Food and Nutrition Education Channel
The new Local Food and Nutrition Education (LFNE) Channel consists of community-based projects, mostly operated by non-profits. LFNE projects provide nutrition education to low-income Californians and to a lesser degree, promote physical activity and participation in the Food Stamp Program. LFNE projects operate at local levels and are funded for up to four years with USDA Food Stamp Nutrition Education Funding.
Food and Nutrition Education Action Committee
Along with the Food Security Channel’s establishment in FFY 1998, the Network’s Food Security Task Force (FSTF) was formed. The FSTF consisted of representatives from funded food security projects; representatives from non-funded hunger, food security, advocacy, and policy development organizations in California; consultants; and Network staff. The FSTF members met three times a year to share information about best practices and lessons learned; meetings also provided opportunities for training, continuing education, networking, and mutual support between members.
In FFY 2006, the FSTF was renamed the Food and Nutrition Education Action Committee (PDF)
. It continues to meet three times a year and provides similar opportunities as the FSTF. One notable difference is that the Action Committee is aimed at providing high quality nutrition education at local and regional levels.
