Hepatitis A Outbreak at Restaurant in San Diego

The San Diego County Health and Human Services Agency and Department of Environmental Health investigated a hepatitis A virus (HAV) outbreak that was linked to a Mexican restaurant in La Mesa. A total of 22 confirmed cases, aged 24-59, became ill in April after dining at the restaurant between March 3 and March 16.  Four cases were hospitalized; all have since recovered.  San Diego County is working with the restaurant to improve food handling practices and to prevent future disease.  No other counties in California are experiencing unusual HAV activity.
